the race that might have been

Sterling sounded like a great time. At least from a few reports that I read about.

Heading out of VA and getting close to Taneytown there was a slight temptation to go do the race. It would have been a blast I think. Weather like that, cold, wet I love. It is my kind of racing. Just check out the photostream. Seriously looked like a boat load of fun.

And we were w/in 10 miles of it or so on the trip. But we left too late to get me there to line up with the MABRA Elite Masters, and with the rain forecast for the whole ride, and still being tired as hell, not racing would be the right choice. Good thing because I'm not sure turning our 12 hour saga into a 15 hour one would have been a good idea. But it just looks like my kind of course.

Started reading a book down there. A Hunter S Thompson novel. Hells Angels. 3/4 of the way done. A damn fine read.

A bunch of the passages about the mentality it takes to ride a motorcycle could be speaking about bicycles. And another note - Il Bruce would "like" the fact that Hunter doesn't call em "Bikers" they are called "cyclists" in the book. Yeah. So stuff that aversion to "bikers" in ya old corn cob pipe and smoke it! J/K 40 years or so of time can change a meaning or the use of a word. Il B might be old but he ain't old enough to have been around when the cool kids were riding chopped Harley 74s and being called cyclists, not bikers.

Time to go for a rare lunch acquisition expedition. 10pm pasta with some extra virgin olive oil and fancy parma cheese doesn't leave enough left overs.

but damn is it warm out there (from looking at the internet reporting of the temps). Might even be shorts and short sleeves for the ride home tonight.

HST is one of my personal heros. For an incredibly appropriate tribute, go here:

http://www.flyingdogales.com/gonzo-hunter.asp

"In his final Gonzo act, which Hunter managed to pull off from the grave, he turned his funeral into a Gonzo celebration for the ages. From a 153 foot tall Gonzo Fist (that's 2 feet taller than the Staue of Liberty) that was custom build on his Owl Ranch in Woody Creek, Hunter had his remains blown out of a cannon that turned into a fireworks display that would shame most cities, Fourth of July celebrations."

The owner of Flying Dog was a personal friend of Gonzo, and his friend Steadman. Steadman makes all the labels for Flying Dog ales as well.

You MUST buy some Imperial Porter if you can find it.
