are not reading it you should be. Tilford strolled through the Sunday night party - did shots with a wicked wicked way drunk guy with the initials TH, and National Champ Timmie and Bart Bowen. He was seen through out the weekend, just not on his bike.
I'd heard of his blog but never really read it. Hit it this morning and the entry about Risk was pretty much up there. I certainly wasn't taking as many risks as I could have been in the Single Speed race, but crashing as hard as I did in the 35-39 race and the Cyclocross Clydesdale Championship of the Universe, I know I wasn't holding back too much. I'm still very much like I was in College, hoping I don't break the bike because I can't afford to replace busted stuff, my body will heal, my bike? Not so much.
Wicked cold (for how i dressed). 20°F (it never was 23 at the house) with a 20-30mph headwind. That is kind of cold.

tilford isn't in touch with the average athlete. He has had a level of success, whether through hard work or natural talent, that most people will never realize. He races for objective results while the rest of us race for subjective results.
When you race for objective, quantifiable results (win, podium, UCI points, or $$$) like Tilford does you have to up your level of comfort, take risks, and leave it all out on the course.
When you race for subjective results (like fun), you have to weigh in things like "time with the family," "ratio of risk to reward," and "weather."
There is no right or wrong, just different objectives.
